Introduction to the Toolkit – Kellie O’Dare

Transcript

Hi, I’m Dr. Kellie O’Dare, founder, and director of the Second Alarm Project. The First Responder Behavioral Health Access Program Toolkit is a comprehensive resource designed to support the behavioral health needs of first responders. Created by the Second Alarm Project and its partners, including UCF RESTORES and the Florida Firefighters’ Safety and Health Collaborative, with help from the City of Coral Springs. This Toolkit offers a range of evidence-informed strategies and interventions tailored specifically to address the unique challenges first responders face. To access the Toolkit, visit the Second Alarm Project website and you will find the link to the Toolkit. With the First Responder BHAP Toolkit, you can prioritize your agency’s mental and emotional well-being, while your members continue to serve their community. Additionally, each component of the First Responder BHAP Toolkit can be developed independently, meaning that if you already have one component in place, you can address the others until your BHAP is complete. In addition, each module includes a task book to help facilitate program development and implementation. This allows for greater flexibility in tailoring the Toolkit to meet your agency or department’s specific needs and resources. So, whether you’re looking to implement a comprehensive BHAP or improve an existing program, the First Responder BHAP Toolkit can help get you there.

Overview

The 2nd Alarm Project provides support to departments in building comprehensive Behavioral Health Access Programs (BHAP). The BHAP is recognized by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as a best practice and is becoming a world standard of care for first responders. Our team and amazing partners created this BHAP Toolkit that gives first responder departments concrete tools, resources, and strategies to integrate the BHAP model into their day-to-day operations. The BHAP Toolkit includes sections on how to create programs and supports for first responders and their families.

The Toolkit also includes a section for clinicians interested in working with first responders. This section of the Toolkit helps to build clinicians’ capacity and connect them with the best available training and resources to provide culturally competent treatment for first responders and their families. The 2nd Alarm Project, in partnership with UCF RESTORES and the Florida Firefighters Safety and Health Collaborative, with support from The Florida Department of Children and Families, is excited to bring you this widely requested first responder mental wellness resource.
